Literal question
Over the past month, has anyone in your household operated any non-agricultural income-generating enterprise which produces goods or services or has anyone in your houshold owned a shop or operated a trading business?
Interviewer instructions
Note that we ONLY consider OWNED enterprises here. Being employee of an enterprise does NOT imply that you operate it. This does not have to be an income generating acitiviy that runs everyday. E.g If a household member went to town, bought some Kangas and re-sold them but does not do this REGULARLY, we still count that they operated an income generating enterprise. CONFIRM this question by asking "Does it mean that you didn't operate any income generating activity in the past month?"
Definition: For an income generating activity to be classified as:
(i) AGRICULTURAL – the household has to FARM a product and SELL it in it’s RAW form.
(ii) NON-AGRICULTURAL – this is any other business that does not fit in the above definition.
This question aims at getting information on NON-AGRICULTURAL income generating activities. Here are some examples to give more clarity:
- If a household farms coconuts and sells them in their raw form (madafu or coconuts) THEN the answer to this question will be a “NO” because they are selling their OWN produced products in their raw form.
- If a household farms coconuts and makes coconut oil, which they then sell, THEN the answer to this question will be a “YES” because they are selling PROCESSED not RAW goods.
- If a household buys coconuts from a market and re-sells them THEN the answer to this question will be a “YES” because they are buying and selling NONE OWN produced products.
- If a household BUYS coconuts and makes coconut oil, which they then sell, THEN the answer to this question will be a “YES” because they sell NONE OWN produced products.
