For children with diarrhea in the past 2 weeks, DIATRBI3 indicates, in response to an open-ended question, whether the child received treatment from a public national reference hospital. This response category is country-specific to Burundi.

Some samples in the "DIATR" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

DIATRBI3 is combined with DIATRBI4 (public regional reference hospital) and DIATRBI5 (public district hospital) in DIATRPUBHOS (all public hospitals) for the 2016 Burundi sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using DIATRBI3 are encouraged to review DIATRPUBHOS for a more comprehensive response category.
