Interviewer instructions
Put this question to every individual who did not attend school and did not hold an academic qualification: Can he read and write in any language? Write down 1 if he can read and write; 2 if he can read only; 3 if he is illiterate. By "can read" is meant that the individual is able to read and comprehend a simple paragraph, several lines in a newspaper for instance in any language. By "can write" is meant that the individual is able to write several lines on a simple subject which can be read by others and in any language.
