    Abstract
    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO launched Round 10 of the DIEM Monitoring household survey in Myanmar to assess rural livelihoods and food security. Data collection was conducted from 27 July to 20 August 2024 through computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI), reaching 2552 households. The survey was representative at the state/region (admin 1) level for 14 states and regions (excluding Nay Pyi Taw), though small sample sizes limited representativeness in Chin, Kachin, Kayah, and Rakhine states.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

    Surveys are designed based on country-specific needs, objectives, and constraints. They aim to achieve a 10 percent margin of error, a 95 percent confidence level, administrative-level granularity, and sufficient sample sizes for key target populations, including agricultural households.

    The survey used a mixed sampling strategy involving re-contacting households from previous rounds and Random Digit Dialing (RDD). The sample was stratified by state/region (admin 1) and designed to yield statistically reliable results at that level.
    Deviations from the Sample Design

    While the target was 4600 households across Myanmar, the final number of completed interviews was 2552. The survey was not representative in Nay Pyi Taw and had limited representativeness in Chin, Kachin, Kayah, and Rakhine due to low sample sizes.
    Weighting

    Sampling weights were applied to correct for disproportionate stratification and ensure representativeness. Post-stratification adjustments were made based on:

    • Demographics (e.g. household size)
    • Engagement in agriculture
    • Wealth proxy (education level of household head)

    These adjustments allowed for unbiased estimation of indicators and better alignment with the actual population distribution.

    The datasets have been edited and processed for analysis by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Data in Emergencies (DIEM) Hub at the Office of Emergencies and Resilience, with some dashboards and visualizations produced.
