    Abstract
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO launched the first round of the DIEM-Monitoring household survey in Palestine (West Bank governorates) in May 2024 as a pilot initiative to test the methodology in this context. Data collection was conducted via mobile phone interviews. A total of 1323 beneficiary households were surveyed across eight governorates, including a combined stratum for Qalqilya, Salfit, and Tulkarm governorates. The sampling design ensured proportional representation of the FAO beneficiary population, particularly agricultural households, with oversampling of livestock producers.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

Surveys are designed based on country-specific needs, objectives, and constraints. They aim to achieve a 10 percent margin of error, a 95 percent confidence level, administrative-level granularity, and sufficient sample sizes for key target populations, including agricultural households.

The DIEM Round 1 survey was conducted in the West Bank; it applied a stratified sampling approach limited to FAO beneficiary households from 2019 to 2023. The sample was designed to be representative of this target group across eight governorates. Three governorates — Qalqilya, Salfit, and Tulkarm — were merged into a single stratum due to small sample sizes. A total of 1323 interviews were completed, with minimum required samples reached in all strata except Jericho. The sample was skewed towards agricultural households, particularly livestock producers, due to the nature of past FAO input distribution programs.

    Weighting

Sample weights were manually computed using population distribution data for FAO beneficiaries and livelihood engagement categories (crop vs. livestock producers). Adjustments were made using an external weight table to reflect proportional representation across strata. Manual verification of income sources (e.g., resp_islsproducer, resp_iscropproducer) was conducted using the original hh_agricactivity_raw variable due to classification inconsistencies. Final weights were included in the cleaned dataset for proper aggregation of indicators.
