Abstract

Socioemotional skills (SES) programs are widely used to promote economic empowerment, yet their returns may depend on the type of skills targeted and social context. The impact evaluation measures the effect of different types of SES using a randomized controlled trial (RCT) among 4,500 aspiring agribusiness entrepreneurs in Nigeria within a large-scale government program. Participants were randomly assigned to an interpersonal-skills curriculum, a combined interpersonal and intrapersonal-skills curriculum of the same length, or a control group. This dataset contains survey responses from the agribusiness owners (men and women) conducted over the phone prior to the implementation of the socioemotional skills intervention.

Sampling Procedure

The baseline sample is comprised of 4,500 agribusiness owners (2,250 men and 2,250 women) within Lagos, Kaduna, Kogi, Cross River, Enugu and Kano states in Nigeria. The sample was defined by sampling from applicant database of the APPEALS WYEP program. Baseline surveys were conducted over the phone prior to the implementation of the socioemotional skills training.

The data consists of responses from agribusiness owners to questions pertaining to (i) business ownership and firm performance; (ii) business practices; (iii) socioemotional skills; (iv) women empowerment and intra-household bargaining; and (v) household income.
