Notes
Fertility preferences. This variable comes primarily from a single question in the MEASURE DHS+ questionnaires. This is the same question used in the DHS I Model "B" questionnaire, the DHS II, and the DHS III Model "A" and "B" questionnaires. However, for DHS I Model "A" questionnaires, this variable was constructed from a series of questions. Men who respond that they want another child, but when asked when they would like the next child, respond that they cannot have any more children or their wife cannot get pregnant, are classified in the "declared infecund category", and not in the "Wants another" category. These men can be identified in variable MV616, where the original response to the question asking how long they would like to wait before having another child is recorded. In some countries, men who had never had sexual intercourse were not asked the questions relating to desire for future children, and are coded 6 on MV602.
