The sample allocation was approximately proportional to the 1991 population census. All samples were drawn with a probability proportional to size. Those sample sizes were: Blacks 1 100, Whites 400, Coloureds 300, Asians 200.
The data were weighted according to the adjusted 1991 population census data per population group per geographical region. The weighting corrects any bias in the sample data on age, gender and educational qualifications of each population group. Then two sets of weights were calculated for the population in general and for the age group of 18 years and older.

Fieldwork area
The fieldwork was done countrywide including in the self-governing areas and parts of the TBVC states (Ciskei and Venda).
Fieldwork period
Fieldwork took place from 1 to 19 February 1993. The period included the training of the interviewers by the different fieldwork organisers, the conducting of the interviews and the collection and checking of the completed questionnaires.
Method of data collection
The data were collected by trained interviewers by means of personal interviews with scientifically drawn respondents.
The respondents were visited at home and the interviews were usually done after hours to ensure that the qualifying person was present.
If the qualifying respondent was not available but would be available during the period of the fieldwork, an appointment was made and the particular household was revisited. If the qualifying respondent was not available for the duration of the survey, the household was replaced with another one.
The questions were in Afrikaans and English in the questionnaire, were translated into the particular black languages of the survey area and the interviews were conducted in the language preferred by the respondents.
