Definition
For women who gave birth in the last three to five years, DELML1_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported an obstetrics nurse gave delivery care for a recent birth. This response category is country-specific to Mali.
DELML1_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELML1_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELML1_02, DELML1_03, DELML1_04, DELML1_05, and DELML1_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELML1_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.
Some samples in the "DEL" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
DELML1_ALL is combined with DELML2_ALL (other nurse) and DELML3_ALL (midwife) for the 2006 Mali sample to create the standard variable DELNURM_ALL. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using DELML1_ALL are encouraged to review DELNURM_ALL for this more comprehensive response category.
