L'Enquête Démographique et de Santé 1991 est la première EDS réalisée au Cameroun.

L'univers de l'enquête couvre les ménages, les femmes éligibles du ménage, c'est-à-dire, toutes les femmes âgées de 15-49 ans, ayant passées la nuit précédant l'interview dans le ménage sélectionné, quel que soit leur statut de résidence, les hommes et les enfants de moins de cinq ans.

Des 154 grappes tirées, 149 seulement ont été couvertes sur le terrain. Pour des raisons diverses, cinq grappes n'ont pas été enquêtées: une grappe dans la province de l'Adamaoua, restée inaccessible pendant la période de l'enquête en raison de grandes pluies et quatre dans la province du Nord-Ouest non enquêtées pour des raisons de force majeure.
Face-to-face
A l'intérieur des 149 grappes, on a sélectionné 4272 ménages, dans lesquels 4147 femmes éligibles ont été identifiées pour l'enquête individuelle femme et un sous-échantillon du 1011 maris a été sélectionné pour l'enquête mari. Parmi les ménages sélectionnés, 3647 ont été identifi6s et 3538 ont 6Ié enquêtés avec succès, soit un taux de réponse de 97,0 pour cent. Parmi les femmes éligibles, 4106 ont été identifiées et 3871 enquêtées avec succès, soit un taux de réponse de 94,3 pour cent et enfin, parmi les matis éligibles, 998 ont été identifiés et 814 enquêtés avec succès, soit un taux de réponse de 81,6 pour cent.
On appelle erreurs de mesure les biais imputables a la mise en œuvre de la collecte et de l'exploitation des données tels que l'omission de ménages sélectionnes, la mauvaise interprétation de questions, soit de la part de l'enquêtrice, soit de la part de l'enquêtée, ou encore tels que les erreurs de saisie des données. Quoique tout le possible ait été fait pour minimiser ce type d'erreur pendant la mise en œuvre de I'EDSC, il est très difficile d'éviter et d'évaluer toutes les erreurs de mesure.
