MAINACTIVITY reports the main activity of household members during a specified reference period.

IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for this variable, dividing responses into three broad categories (working, unemployed, and not in labor force), with additional detail preserved in the second digit. If working and doing some second activity (such as housework or attending school) is reported, the response is categorized under the "working" heading, with the additional activity reported in the second digit.
