Sampling Design
The National survey was conducted as part of the regular nation-wide OMNIBUS survey undertaken by MarkData, the opinion-polling organisation of the HSRC. The basic sample is a stratified probability sample of 2 100 South African adults of 18 years and older, drawn in metropolitan, urban and rural-agricultural areas. The final stage of selection of a respondent is based on a random selection 'grid', thereby avoiding bias in selection. The sampling frame is based on the Enumerator Areas of the 1991 population census. The final sample realised has been weighted to bring it into conformity with the distributions in the census. The basic sample excludes Transkei and Bophuthatswana due to the need to make it comparable with earlier Omnibus surveys. Results on political support patterns for the same period in these two territories are available from the HSRC. These have been added to the basic sample for purposes of estimating party support in the country as a whole.

Eleven teams of black field-workers were used in the first phase and nine such teams in the second phase. Each of these teams of field workers consisted of four interviewers. The teams were deployed in the various areas according to a fieldwork programme. Maps and aerial photographs were used to identify the areas and survey regions. Due to the size of the sample and time restrictions, the teams had to cope with a heavy schedule and send statistics on the progress in the field to the office every day. The white, coloured and Asian interviewers worked independently and were visited regularly at which time their work was also checked.
