Scope
The survey focused on employment, demographics, and wages and covers all household members, i.e. about 50 000 individuals. A randomly selected person of working age in each household was inverviewed in more depth. Among other things, they were asked about work status, time period in (or outside) the labour market as well as basic conditions of employment, labour relations, wages, occupation and the organisation for whom they work (for those in employment).

The lowest level of geographic aggregation covered by the data is enumerator area. The data is also at magisterial district level.
The representative sample was provided by the Department of Labour and Fafo and was designed to include the South African population of persons 15 years and older for the household section and 18 years and older for the individual RSI section.

The questionnaires, which were administered during this survey, involved a household questionnaire as well as a RSI (Randomly Selected Individual) questionnaire

Fieldwork started the 18th of October 1999 in most provinces, and on 20th October in KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape. Fieldwork was completed on 17th December 1999. In January follow-up interviews were done in problem areas or areas that could not be accessed during the initial fieldwork period. Fieldwork for the follow-up interview was completed during January 2000.
