Definition
TIMEMENSCALC (V226) reports the computed time since the respondent's last menstrual period.
According to the DHS Recode Manuals, this variable
is computed from the response for V215, with durations exceeding the interval since the last birth (V227 = 7,9) recoded to the response "Before last birth" (code 995) and inconsistent responses flagged on variable 227 (codes 1-6) recoded to 997.
Restated in terms of IPUMS-DHS variables and variable labels, TIMEMENSCALC is computed from the response for TIMEMENSTRUATE (Time since woman's last menstrual period). Cases with durations exceeding the interval since the last birth, when MENSTIMFLAG (Flag for reported time since last menstrual period) has values for "Reported time during pregnancy" or "Reported period before last birth," are recoded as "Before last birth" in TIMEMENSCALC. Cases with inconsistent or implausible responses according to MENSTIMFLAG (for example, the woman reportedly never menstruated but she has given birth) are recoded to "Inconsistent" for TIMEMENSCALC.
