316. May I begin the process of measuring your blood pressure? I will begin by measuring the circumference of your arm to make sure that I use the right equipment. MEASURE THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE RESPONDENT'S ARM MIDWAY BETWEEN THE ELBOW AND THE SHOULDER. RECORD THE MEASUREMENT IN CENTIMETERS.

HWMBPARMCIRC reports the circumference (in centimeters) of the male household member's arm, midway between the elbow and the shoulder.
When the blood pressure cuff is too large or too small, errors in measuring blood pressure can occur. Using cuffs that are too small or too short can lead to overestimates of the systolic and diastolic measurements. Similarly, using cuffs that are too large can lead to underestimates. The related variable HWMBPMODEL reports the blood pressure monitor cuff size used to measure the man's blood pressure.
