HCZA3 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported seeking medical help from a traditional healer. This variable is country-specific to South Africa.
Some samples in the "HC" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCZA3 is combined with HCZA4 (traditional herbalist) and HCZA5 (faith healer) in HCPRIVHL (all traditional practitioners/healers) for the 2016 South Africa sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCZA3 are encouraged to reviewer HCPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.
