Question 2. This household is: observe and record
First check the conditions of occupancy of the household. In other words, if the household is occupied by present members or if the members of the household are absent or if the household is vacant. Fill in the corresponding bubble to the condition of occupancy of the household.
Before you finish filling in question 2, which refers to the type of household, it is necessary to define the following important concepts:
1. Occupied dwelling with residents refers to the case in which there is at least one member of the household present during the census survey.
2. Occupied dwelling with absent residents means that at the moment of the survey there were no members of the household present however there are signs of residents living there.
If the household is occupied with absent residents you should ask a neighbor when the residents of the household will be back, and then return to the household at the time in which the residents are present in order to conduct the interview. If you do not get any information about the time in which the residents will return, you can leave a message for the residents with a neighbor stating when you will return including the date and time for the census interview. Once you have done that move on to the next household.
3. Vacant household is a house that is uninhabited. In other words, where there are no signs of people living there.
Do not assume upon first glance that a household is vacant even if there is a sign "for rent" or "for sale", or if the household is closed; make sure to ask or find out from the neighbors what is the condition of the place. Make sure that, if the situation of the household is for sure vacant, to fill in the bubble that next to the code 3. Additionally, fill in questions 3 and 4, and then continue with the next household.
