Description

Definition
TBSUFFER indicates whether the household member is "suffering from tuberculosis."

TBSUFFER differs across samples in question wording, particularly in terms of how information was collected and whether the question explicitly focused on "usual household members" or all persons in the household listing (including temporary visitors). See the country-specific Comparability discussion.

Comparability - Standard DHS

TBSUFFER is a country-specific variable not included in the standard DHS questionnaire.

The 1992 Indian survey collected yes/no information on whether each person in the household listing, including temporary visitors, suffers from tuberculosis.

The 2015 Indian survey collected the information by asking the respondent for the household survey, "Does any usual member of your household suffer from tuberculosis?" If the answer was affirmative, the interviewer asked which person(s) were suffering from tuberculosis and recorded their line number(s) from the household listing. Because the India 2015 question refers to any usual member of your household, researchers may wish to exclude temporary visitors using the HHRESIDENT variable.
